PORTLAND, Ore. — A Washington state man has been sentenced to federal prison after a jury found him guilty of escaping custody by failing to report to a residential re-entry facility in Portland, federal prosecutors announced.
Brandon Charles Nelson, 40, was sentenced Tuesday to 24 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release.
According to court records, Nelson was previously convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm and received a sentence of 36 months in prison followed by 36 months of supervised release. After violating the conditions of his supervised release for a third time, Nelson’s supervision was revoked on Feb. 25, 2025. He was then sentenced to an additional 12 months in prison and 18 months of supervised release.
While serving that sentence at the Victorville Federal Correctional Institution in California, Nelson qualified for placement in a residential re-entry center and was directed to report to the Northwest Regional Re-entry Center (NWRRC) in Portland. Instead of reporting as required, authorities said Nelson absconded.
The U.S. Marshals Service located and arrested Nelson on Dec. 5, 2025.
A federal grand jury in Portland returned an indictment on Dec. 16, 2025, charging Nelson with escape from custody. Following a two-day trial, a jury convicted Nelson on Feb. 25, 2026, of one count of escape from custody.
U.S. Attorney Scott E. Bradford of the District of Oregon announced the sentence.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service. Assistant U.S. Attorney Arin Heinz prosecuted the case.
