SALEM, Ore. — August 14, 2026 — A Marion County jury has convicted a 37-year-old man of multiple crimes stemming from the physical and emotional abuse of his 13-year-old child, including an incident involving the family dog.
Bryon Gilmore was sentenced Thursday by Marion County Circuit Court Judge Jennifer Gardiner to 56 months in the Oregon Department of Corrections. Gilmore was convicted of two counts of Criminal Mistreatment in the First Degree, as well as one count each of Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Animal Abuse in the Second Degree and Menacing.
The case was referred to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office in January 2024 after the child disclosed a history of abuse by Gilmore, the child’s father. According to the Marion County District Attorney’s Office, the abuse began when the victim was about 7 years old and included being struck without warning and subjected to deliberate cruelty while at Gilmore’s home.
The disclosure followed an incident on January 5, 2024, when Gilmore directed his anger toward the family dog and then toward the child. After telling the child’s mother about the incident, the victim disclosed additional instances of abuse.
Investigators also learned that after law enforcement became involved, Gilmore instructed the child not to tell anyone about the incidents, including a judge.
During sentencing, Judge Gardiner cited Gilmore’s role as the child’s parent as an aggravating factor.
“The fact that the adult in [the child’s] world, charged with keeping them safe, was the one who perpetrated the nightmare, is certainly an aggravating factor,” Gardiner said.
“Children in our community deserve to be safe in their own homes and with their own parents,” District Attorney-elect Brendan Murphy said. “This victim suffered at the hands of someone who should’ve provided protection. Their bravery and courage in coming forward were critical in the resolution of this case.”
The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Katharine Semple. The Marion County District Attorney’s Office also thanked the Marion County Sheriff’s Criminal Investigation Unit and Liberty House for their assistance with the investigation and support of the child.
Because the case involves a juvenile victim, the District Attorney’s Office said no further information will be released.
