Washington, D.C. — Reports from New York Post and The Hill indicate that former National Counterterrorism Center Director Joe Kent is under investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation for allegedly leaking classified information.
The investigation, first reported by Semafor and confirmed by The Hill’s sister network NewsNation, was reportedly underway prior to Kent’s resignation earlier this week. According to sources cited in both outlets, the probe predates his public break with the administration over U.S. military actions involving Iran.
Kent resigned Tuesday from his role under Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, citing disagreement with President Donald Trump over the administration’s assessment of Iran as an imminent threat. In his resignation letter and subsequent interview with commentator Tucker Carlson, Kent argued that intelligence did not support claims that Iran posed an immediate danger.
Administration officials strongly rejected those assertions. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt called Kent’s claims “insulting and laughable,” while Trump told reporters he viewed Kent as “very weak on security” and said his departure was appropriate given his stance on Iran.
The FBI has declined public comment on the investigation, and specific details regarding the alleged leaks have not been disclosed. The Hill reported that the probe focuses on whether Kent improperly disclosed classified intelligence, though no charges have been announced.
The situation has added to an already contentious debate within conservative political and media circles over U.S. involvement in the Iran conflict. Kent, a former Republican congressional candidate, has argued that external influences shaped the administration’s decision-making, while senior officials maintain that military action was based on credible intelligence of an impending threat.
As of now, the investigation remains ongoing, with no formal findings released.
