Many of the school districts in the Portland area have issued notices that they will be closing early today Friday, January 12, 2024. The City of Portland has issued an advisory, linked here, expecting snow and extreme cold this weekend. The National Weather Service has issued a warning of hazardous weather conditions for Portland and is forecasting snow through the weekend and into next week.
The forecast for the weekend is:
Friday
Rain and snow likely before 11am, then a slight chance of snow between 11am and 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a temperature rising to near 35 by noon, then falling to around 27 during the remainder of the day. Northeast wind 7 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
Friday Night
Snow likely, mainly after 4am. Patchy blowing snow after 4am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 13. Wind chill values as low as -6. Windy, with an east northeast wind 20 to 28 mph, with gusts as high as 41 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
Saturday
Snow before 10am, then sleet between 10am and 1pm, then snow and sleet after 1pm. Patchy blowing snow before 10am. Steady temperature around 15. Wind chill values as low as -6. Very windy, with an east northeast wind 26 to 30 mph, with gusts as high as 45 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.
Saturday Night
Snow and sleet likely before 10pm, then a chance of snow. Patchy blowing snow between 10pm and 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 13. Wind chill values as low as -4. Windy, with an east northeast wind 18 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 38 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than one inch possible.
Sunday
Partly sunny, with a high near 28. East northeast wind 8 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph.
