SALEM, Ore. — A 24-year-old woman was injured in a shooting Saturday night after a confrontation over fireworks escalated into a physical altercation in southeast Salem, according to the Salem Police Department.
Officers responded to the 1400 block of Mill Street SE at approximately 10:30 p.m. on July 4 after receiving reports of a disturbance. When they arrived, they found the woman suffering from a gunshot wound to her lower leg.
Investigators said the incident began when a 54-year-old man and his son approached a group of nearly 20 young adults who were setting off fireworks in a private parking lot. The man, who serves as the property’s groundskeeper, reportedly told the group they did not have permission to be on the property and asked them to leave.
According to police, the group refused to leave, and several individuals allegedly began physically assaulting the groundskeeper.
During the altercation, the man reportedly drew a firearm and fired several rounds into the ground. One of the bullets struck the 24-year-old woman in the lower leg.
The Salem Police Violent Crimes Unit is leading the investigation. As of Monday, no charges have been filed, and detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
