PORTLAND, Ore. — A 31-year-old Mexican national who was unlawfully residing in the United States has been federally indicted following the seizure of more than 17.5 pounds of narcotics, firearms, and approximately $25,000 in cash, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon announced.
Federal prosecutors charged Baltazar Plata Bringas with conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine and fentanyl, possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and unlawful possession of a firearm.
According to court documents, investigators arrested Plata Bringas on May 26, 2026, during what authorities described as a drug transaction. A search of his vehicle allegedly uncovered approximately 17 bags containing methamphetamine. In total, investigators seized more than 8 kilograms (17.6 pounds) of methamphetamine.
A subsequent search of Plata Bringas’ residence led to the discovery of multiple firearms and approximately $25,000 in cash, according to prosecutors.
Photographs released by investigators show the seized methamphetamine packaged in three labeled evidence bags, several firearms displayed alongside a camouflage bag, and bundles of cash secured with rubber bands.
Plata Bringas was arraigned in federal court on June 24, 2026, where he pleaded not guilty to the charges. A federal judge ordered him detained pending further court proceedings.
The case is being investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott Kerin prosecuting.
Federal officials said the investigation was conducted through the Oregon Homeland Security Task Force as part of Operation Take Back America, a Department of Justice initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration, transnational criminal organizations, cartel activity, and violent crime through joint operations with the Department of Homeland Security.
The prosecution is also part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a nationwide initiative that coordinates federal, state, and local law enforcement efforts to reduce violent crime and gun violence through targeted enforcement and community partnerships.
As with all criminal cases, the indictment is an allegation only. Plata Bringas is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
