SALEM, Ore. — A 16-year-old juvenile was taken into custody Thursday after a joint investigation involving the Salem Police Department and the FBI disrupted what authorities described as a potential school-related threat involving firearms.
According to Salem police, detectives were alerted by the FBI at approximately 9:33 a.m. on June 4 after information surfaced indicating the juvenile had been researching school shootings, exhibiting concerning behavior, and accessing materials related to the manufacture of firearms.
Following the notification, Salem police immediately coordinated with Salem-Keizer Public Schools to assess and address any potential risks to students and staff. Investigators learned the juvenile was not attending classes at West Salem High School that day, prompting detectives to begin surveillance at locations the teen was known to frequent.
As the investigation progressed, authorities traced the juvenile to a residence on McGilchrist Street SE. At approximately 1:15 p.m., detectives and other officers surrounded the property and called for the juvenile to exit in an effort to ensure a safe resolution.
The teen emerged from an attached shed and was taken into custody without incident, police said.
Investigators determined the alleged criminal activity occurred in Polk County. The juvenile was lodged at the Yamhill County Juvenile Detention Center and is facing charges related to the manufacturing of a firearm.
Law enforcement officials credited the swift response and cooperation among multiple agencies for preventing a potentially dangerous situation. The investigation involved the Salem Police Department, the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Salem-Keizer Public Schools, and other community partners.
Authorities emphasized that based on the information gathered during the investigation, there is no ongoing threat to local schools or the community.
The investigation remains active, and any additional information regarding potential charges or prosecution will be handled by the Polk County District Attorney’s Office.
