GRESHAM, Ore. — Police used drones and a bomb-detection K9 to investigate a bomb threat at a bank in Gresham on Tuesday morning after an employee reported receiving threatening messages claiming a bomb had been placed in their vehicle.
Officers with the Gresham Police Department responded around 9 a.m. to the 100 block of Northeast 181st Avenue. Authorities said the bank employee contacted police immediately after receiving the threatening messages.
Police secured the area and deployed a drone to visually inspect for any suspicious devices. An explosive ordnance detection dog from the Port of Portland Police Department assigned to TriMet’s Transit Police Unit also responded to assist.
K9 Jacky and the dog’s handler searched both the parking lot and the interior of the bank. After the search was completed, officers determined the scene was safe. The investigation at the location lasted approximately 90 minutes.
According to preliminary information, investigators believe the threatening messages originated from a Voice over Internet Protocol, or VOIP, service.
“The victim of the threat did the right thing by reporting it to police immediately,” Officer Jarom Sweazey said.
The investigation into the source of the hoax threat remains ongoing.
