Portland, Ore. — A Multnomah County jury has convicted Isaac Cortez Bynum Jr. in connection with a 2021 homicide and a separate shooting incident, the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office announced Monday.
Bynum, now 30, was found guilty of Murder in the Second Degree with a Firearm and Unlawful Use of a Weapon in the killing of Seneca Alexander, who was shot and killed on August 24, 2021. The jury also convicted Bynum of Unlawful Use of a Weapon related to a separate shooting that occurred in Portland on August 11, 2021.
In addition, a judge separately convicted Bynum of two counts of Felon in Possession of a Firearm tied to both incidents. In the August 11 shooting case, he was also found guilty of Unlawful Use of a Firearm and Felon in Possession of a Firearm with a Firearm.
Senior Deputy District Attorney Eric Palmer prosecuted the case. Following the verdict, Palmer described Alexander as a teenager whose life was cut short, saying he was “on his way to the movies” when he was killed and “should be with us today.”
The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office credited the investigation to the Major Crimes Team and Detective Isaac Hibbs. Officials also recognized the work of victim advocate Rebecca Leediker for supporting those impacted by the case.
The Facts of the Case
According to trial testimony, on August 24, 2021, Alexander—then 17—met with Bynum south of Gresham High School alongside two friends. Bynum entered Alexander’s vehicle and requested a ride to a nearby store. Surveillance footage showed Bynum wearing a COVID mask throughout the encounter, and the passengers did not know him.
At the store, Bynum made a purchase and received cash back before returning to the vehicle. After driving back to the original meeting location, prosecutors said Bynum exited the car, walked to the driver’s side window, and opened fire, discharging 13 rounds into the vehicle. Nearby surveillance cameras captured the gunfire and recorded Bynum fleeing the scene.
Sentencing has been scheduled for July 24, 2026, at 1:30 p.m.
The case was prosecuted by the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office.
