MEDFORD, Ore. — The Medford Police Department is investigating after a juvenile student reported their school email account had been compromised and used to send a threatening message involving South Medford High School.
According to police, the incident was reported shortly after 12:15 a.m. on Sunday, May 10. The student contacted authorities after discovering an email had been sent from their account indicating a threat toward the school.
The message quickly circulated online, causing concern throughout the community and prompting multiple calls to Emergency Communications of Southern Oregon.
Investigators said the case has remained active since the initial report early Sunday morning. Police are currently working alongside Medford School District staff to gather additional information and determine who may be responsible.
The Medford Police Department said threats involving schools are treated with the utmost seriousness. Officers increased security measures at the campus, and school staff coordinated with law enforcement to conduct a sweep of the school before students arrived Monday morning.
School Resource Officers and additional patrol officers were stationed at South Medford High School on Monday, May 11, and police said an increased law enforcement presence will continue throughout the week. Officials noted that all secondary public schools within the city have a full-time School Resource Officer assigned to them.
At this time, investigators said they do not believe there is a credible threat to student safety based on the information currently available. The investigation remains ongoing.
