LOGSDEN, Ore. — A Newport teenager was recovered from the Siletz River early Saturday morning after emergency responders conducted a search in the remote Siletz River Gorge following reports of a swimmer in distress.
According to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and other emergency personnel were dispatched at approximately 6:33 p.m. on June 13 to a location about two miles upstream from Moonshine Park near Logsden after receiving reports of a missing swimmer.
Witnesses told authorities they saw a male jump from rocks into the river and then struggle to return to shore. Bystanders attempted to locate and rescue the swimmer but were unsuccessful.
At approximately 7:09 p.m., after the swimmer had been missing for about an hour, emergency responders spotted him in 10 to 12 feet of water downstream from where he was last seen. Due to the difficult terrain and challenging recovery conditions, members of the Lane County Search and Rescue Dive Team were called in to assist.
Just after midnight, rescue personnel recovered 18-year-old Dallas Davis of Newport from the river.
The incident is being investigated as a drowning. Authorities said Davis’ next of kin have been notified. Questions regarding the official manner of death should be directed to the Lincoln County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Siletz Fire Department, Lane County Search and Rescue Dive Team, and the Lincoln County Medical Examiner’s Office during the operation.
