Salem Man Sentenced for Abusing Minor Neighbor
SALEM, Ore. — A Marion County man has been sentenced to more than six years in prison after pleading no contest to charges involving the sexual abuse of a child, according to prosecutors.
Last week, Marion County Circuit Court Judge Natasha Zimmerman sentenced 29-year-old John Raymond Alatorre to 75 months in the Oregon Department of Corrections in connection with Marion County Circuit Court Case 26CR02578. Alatorre was convicted on charges of first-degree sexual abuse and attempted first-degree sodomy. He will also be required to register as a sex offender.
The case began in November 2025 when the Salem Police Department received a report of suspected child abuse in the 3000 block of Hawthorne Avenue Northeast.
According to investigators, a mother reported that her 8-year-old daughter entered Alatorre’s apartment after playing outside in a courtyard with other neighborhood children. While inside the apartment, authorities said Alatorre exposed himself and sexually abused the child.
A forensic interview was later conducted by Liberty House, a child advocacy center that assists in abuse investigations involving children.
Salem police interviewed Alatorre on Jan. 13, 2026, and arrested him following the interview. Prosecutors said he was charged with first-degree sexual abuse, which carries a presumptive prison sentence of 75 months under Oregon sentencing laws.
“Crimes against children will always be our priority as our office remains committed to ensuring children are safe,” Chief Deputy District Attorney Brendan Murphy said in a statement. “Children deserve to be safe in their homes, neighborhoods and throughout their entire community.”
The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Katharine Semple.
The Marion County District Attorney’s Office also credited Liberty House and the Salem Police Department for their roles in the investigation.
Due to the involvement of a child victim and the nature of the crimes, authorities said no additional details will be released.
