Teen Arrested After SUV Crashes Into Beaverton Townhomes During Police Pursuit
BEAVERTON, Ore. — A teenager was taken into custody after a stolen SUV crashed into occupied townhomes during an attempted police stop early Thursday morning, according to the Beaverton Police Department.
At approximately 2 a.m., a Beaverton police officer observed a Toyota Sequoia being driven recklessly along SW Tualatin Valley Highway. The officer saw the SUV make an illegal U-turn, strike a concrete median, lose control and continue driving erratically.
The officer attempted to stop the vehicle near SW Tualatin Valley Highway and SW 178th Avenue, but the driver failed to stop and fled northbound on SW 178th Avenue. The driver reportedly ran a stop sign while continuing to elude officers.
The SUV eventually lost control and crashed into occupied townhomes near SW Johnson Street. The crash caused significant damage to the residences, but no townhome occupants were injured.
Two juveniles fled from the vehicle on foot following the crash.
Beaverton police deployed K9 Ox to search for the teens. During the search, community members provided officers with information about seeing the juveniles running through the surrounding neighborhood.
K9 Ox and officers located one of the teens, who surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident. The second teen later returned home and was transported to a hospital for evaluation of injuries sustained during the incident.
Police later determined that the Toyota Sequoia belonged to the parent of one of the teenagers and had been taken without permission.
The teen believed to have been driving was lodged at a juvenile detention center on charges of felony attempt to elude, misdemeanor attempt to elude, reckless driving, reckless endangering, failure to perform the duties of a driver involving property damage, and first-degree criminal mischief.
Because those involved are juveniles, Beaverton police said they will not release their names or other identifying information.
