A driver attempting to pass a truck in a no-passing zone crashed into a home in Multnomah County on Monday afternoon, narrowly avoiding tragedy after the SUV slammed into a baby’s nursery just moments after the child had been removed from the room.
According to the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened around 12:15 p.m. on May 11 in the 5800 block of Southeast Jenne Road in the Pleasant Valley neighborhood.
Deputies and crews with the Gresham Fire Department responded to find a black SUV lodged inside a home after traveling down an embankment and crashing through the structure, causing extensive damage.
Investigators said a 47-year-old woman driving southbound attempted to pass a truck towing a trailer in a designated no-passing zone. While in the northbound lane, she encountered an oncoming vehicle and attempted to merge back into her lane. During the maneuver, the SUV sideswiped the truck and trailer before the driver lost control and went down the embankment.
The SUV ultimately crashed into the residence, directly impacting a baby’s nursery. Authorities said the child’s mother had removed the baby from the room only minutes before the collision occurred.
Despite the severity of the crash, no serious injuries were reported. Paramedics transported the SUV driver to a local hospital for evaluation. Deputies said there were no signs of impairment at the scene.
The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced family with temporary housing.
Investigators said the driver is expected to receive a criminal citation for reckless driving and three counts of recklessly endangering another person.
Due to the investigation and cleanup efforts, Southeast Jenne Road was closed in both directions between Southeast Circle Avenue and Southeast Baldry Street. Authorities did not provide an estimated reopening time.
Photos released by the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office show the black SUV embedded in the side of the home beneath a partially collapsed roof, with debris, broken fencing, and insulation scattered throughout the property.
