An 84-year-old Washington man died Wednesday after his motorcycle left Highway 244 and crashed near the Grande Ronde River in Union County, according to Oregon State Police.
The crash was reported at about 1:04 p.m. Sept. 9 near milepost 37 on Highway 244.
Investigators said Marvin Joseph Mason, 84, of Kennewick, Washington, was riding a gray BMW motorcycle when it left the roadway for an unknown reason and crashed near the bank of the Grande Ronde River.
Mason had been riding with another motorcyclist, Dean Allen Moore, 73, of Richland, Washington, who was operating a silver BMW motorcycle. Moore noticed that Mason was no longer behind him and turned around to look for him. He eventually located Mason and the crashed motorcycle.
Mason was pronounced dead at the scene.
Moore was not injured in the crash.
The highway remained open and was not impacted during the on-scene investigation.
The Union County Sheriff’s Office and Oregon Department of Transportation assisted Oregon State Police with the investigation.
