LANE COUNTY, Ore. — A 35-year-old Junction City man died Tuesday evening after being struck by a vehicle along Highway 99W near Junction City, according to the Oregon State Police.
Troopers responded to the crash at about 4:48 p.m. on May 5 near milepost 110.5 on Highway 99W in Lane County.
A preliminary investigation found that a blue Hyundai Elantra, driven by a 16-year-old female, was traveling southbound when the driver became distracted, left the travel lane, and struck a pedestrian walking along the southbound shoulder of the highway.
The pedestrian was identified as Joel Robert Benjamin Coriell, 35, of Junction City. Coriell was transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries and later died.
The teenage driver reported minor injuries. Authorities said she remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
The crash did not significantly impact traffic during the on-scene investigation.
Oregon State Police were assisted by the Junction City Police Department, the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
