SALEM, Ore. — Families in Salem have a newly refreshed place to play as the Crooked House Playground at Bush’s Pasture Park has officially reopened ahead of schedule following recent upgrades.
City officials announced the playground reopened April 21 after a brief construction closure earlier this month. Favorable weather and efficient construction efforts allowed crews to complete the project sooner than anticipated, restoring a popular play area for local children.
New Playground Surface Installed
The primary focus of the renovation was replacing the playground’s surface with a specialized synthetic turf designed specifically for play areas. This marks the first installation of playground-specific synthetic grass within Salem’s park system.
Unlike traditional sports turf, the new surface is engineered to cushion falls and create a smoother, more accessible environment for children of varying abilities. The turf system also includes Envirofill infill, a coated sand material designed for safety and durability. Its rounded grains help maintain a stable, well-draining surface, while built-in antimicrobial properties support cleanliness and long-term use.
Riverfront Park Playground on Track for July Reopening
Meanwhile, improvements are continuing at the playground in Riverfront Park, which closed earlier in April for a more extensive renovation. The project remains on schedule, with a reopening expected in July.
To minimize disruption, contractors have adjusted construction fencing to ensure continued access to the park’s south restrooms during the upgrade process.
City officials said equipment removed from the former Riverfront Park play structures is being carefully evaluated for reuse. Because the components were manufactured by the same company as many other playgrounds across Salem, compatible parts can be repurposed for repairs and maintenance elsewhere in the city. Materials that cannot be reused are being recycled whenever possible.
More Opportunities to Play
With the Crooked House Playground now open and additional park improvements underway, Salem residents are encouraged to take advantage of the city’s park system and outdoor recreation opportunities as warmer weather arrives.
