PORTLAND, Ore. — April 29, 2026 — A Portland man has been sentenced to more than three years in prison after admitting to a string of burglaries targeting storage units and small businesses in southwest Portland.
Joseph Patrick Doherty, 47, was sentenced Wednesday to 40 months in prison in connection with cases 25CR39436 and 26CR01810. He previously pleaded guilty on April 3, 2026, to one count of burglary in the first degree and six counts of burglary in the second degree.
According to prosecutors, Doherty began committing the crimes in early June 2025, breaking into multiple storage units at a Public Storage facility on Southwest Barbur Boulevard. He stole a variety of items, including memorabilia, kitchenware, electronics, jewelry, and clothing. In one instance, investigators say Doherty left behind court paperwork inside a victim’s storage unit, which included his full name and date of birth—evidence that helped identify him as a suspect.
Authorities said Doherty later targeted small businesses in the Multnomah Village area in late 2025. He admitted to breaking into three businesses—Consign Couture, Little Shop of Drawers, and Merav Beautique—where he stole women’s clothing, jewelry, and purses.
Multnomah County Deputy District Attorney Alex Garcia, who leads the Burglary Task Force, prosecuted the case. After sentencing, Garcia said Doherty’s actions caused significant financial strain for business owners and victims.
“Defendant’s actions are completely inexcusable,” Garcia said. “He targeted small businesses and caused significant financial strain for several business owners. He targeted storage units as his own goldmine to steal prized possessions from many. This sentence clearly highlights that this conduct and greed will not be tolerated.”
The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office credited the investigation to members of the Portland Police Bureau and the Burglary Task Force, including Officer Joey Yoo, Officer Laura Frear, and Officer Amelia Flohr. Investigators reviewed surveillance footage from multiple incidents and ultimately located and arrested Doherty at a residence in southwest Portland. At the time of his arrest, authorities said he was wearing several pieces of stolen jewelry.
Officials say the case reflects continued efforts to hold offenders accountable for property crimes impacting both residents and small businesses in the Portland area.
