Lane County, OR. — Former state representative Charlie Conrad has announced a new campaign to represent Oregon House District 12, this time running as a candidate for the Independent Party of Oregon while also pursuing the Democratic Party’s nomination through a write-in campaign.
Conrad said his campaign will focus on representing all residents of the district rather than aligning with a single political party. In a public statement announcing his candidacy, he said his goal is to “put people over politics” and advocate for families, communities, and local livelihoods.
Although running under the Independent Party of Oregon, Conrad is asking registered Democrats to write in his name during the May 19 primary election. If successful, he hopes to secure both the Independent and Democratic nominations heading into the November general election.
“I understand that representing HD12 in Salem isn’t about simply representing people who vote for me or who are in my party; it is about representing everyone,” Conrad said in his announcement.
Conrad previously served as a Republican state representative before leaving the party and launching an independent campaign earlier this year. His shift away from the GOP followed political disagreements and controversy over his legislative positions, including support for abortion-related legislation. He was formally censured by the Oregon Republican Party during his time in office.
If he secures both nominations, Conrad would appear on the general election ballot as the candidate for both the Independent Party of Oregon and the Democratic Party in the race for House District 12.
