Roseburg, OR. – Roseburg city officials and community members will gather March 5 to celebrate the grand opening of a newly renovated $2.5 million outdoor tennis and pickleball facility at Stewart Park.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 5, at the courts located next to the Umpqua Valley Tennis Center. The project includes eight renovated tennis courts and 10 newly dedicated pickleball courts, along with upgraded fencing, lighting, seating, a new entryway and an enhanced security system.
The courts, which are more than 50 years old, underwent a significant overhaul to address aging infrastructure. Funding for the renovation included a $750,000 state grant secured by Roseburg Parks and Recreation Program Manager Val Ligon, $523,000 in City funding and $1.1 million in matching community contributions raised by the nonprofit Umpqua Valley Tennis Center.
City officials expect strong community interest once the facility opens.
“We’re anticipating it will be so busy that a schedule will need to be put into place,” Ligon said. “There’s a lot of excitement about the new courts, and people want to get out there and play.”
Court fees will remain unchanged. Adults will continue to pay $2 per visit, while youths age 18 and under will play free of charge. The Umpqua Valley Tennis Center will also introduce a new month-to-month outdoor-only membership option for non-members, priced at $25 for adults and $45 for households, with no annual commitment required.
Players are responsible for bringing their own rackets and balls. Additional information about classes and tournaments is available through the Umpqua Valley Tennis Center website.
