Salem, OR. — A 33-year-old Monmouth man was arrested Saturday evening following a shooting at a market in northeast Salem that left no injuries but resulted in multiple felony charges.
Officers responded around 6:55 p.m. on February 14 to reports of gunfire at a U.S. Market in the 1000 block of Broadway Street NE. According to police, a dispute between a store clerk and a male customer escalated after the suspect retrieved a handgun from his vehicle.
Investigators said the man used the firearm to break a store window before leaving the area. As he drove away, he allegedly fired multiple shots toward the building. Bullets struck just feet from where the clerk had taken cover inside the store.
Police identified the suspect as Jonathan Roy Debnam, 33, of Monmouth. Detectives from the Salem Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit joined the investigation, and information about the vehicle was shared with nearby agencies.
The Monmouth Police Department later located the vehicle near its police station. Salem officers, along with a K-9 unit and deputies from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and Independence Police Department, responded to assist.
Debnam was taken into custody without incident when he attempted to return to the monitored vehicle. He was transported to the Salem Police Department and later lodged at the Marion County Jail.
He faces charges including Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and Menacing. Authorities said additional charges may be pending.
The investigation remains ongoing. Further inquiries have been directed to the Marion County District Attorney’s Office.
Salem police said the case underscores the department’s continued commitment to its Community Violence Reduction Initiative, aimed at reducing violent crime and holding offenders accountable.
