Federal agents searched U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Washington-area home Monday, October 12, as part of an ongoing criminal investigation that news organizations reported involves alleged immigration fraud.

Reuters reported, citing a person familiar with the investigation, that part of the inquiry concerns immigration paperwork completed by Omar’s late father when she was a child. The Minnesota Democrat has denied wrongdoing. www.reuters.com

The Justice Department confirmed that Homeland Security Investigations agents executed a judicially authorized search warrant obtained by DOJ in the Washington, D.C., area. Its statement described the operation as part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation but did not identify Omar or explain the suspected offense, according to The Washington Post. The reported immigration connection therefore comes from sources familiar with the inquiry rather than details disclosed in DOJ’s public statement.

Fox News reported, citing two sources close to the investigation, that the search was connected to a criminal fraud inquiry involving the lawmaker’s immigration documents. The report said agents began the operation around 6 a.m. and that DOJ was participating in the investigation.

Omar condemned the search as politically motivated. The Associated Press reported that she said she would “not be silenced” and described the operation as an escalation of President Donald Trump’s campaign of intimidation. She has consistently denied allegations of immigration fraud.

The operation occurred weeks before the November midterm elections, prompting Democratic leaders to question its timing and whether federal law enforcement was being used against a political opponent. Those objections remain allegations about the administration’s motives; DOJ’s statement provided no explanation for the timing.

Omar represents Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, including Minneapolis, and was first elected to Congress in 2018. No formal charges had been announced in connection with Monday’s search as of the reporting reviewed for this article. The publicly available accounts do not establish what evidence investigators presented to obtain the warrant or whether the inquiry will result in charges.
