16-Year-Old Arrested After Reported Handgun Assault in Southeast Salem

SALEM, Ore. — A 16-year-old juvenile was taken into custody Thursday afternoon after allegedly striking another person in the head with a handgun in southeast Salem, according to the Salem Police Department.

Officers responded at approximately 2:34 p.m. on October 8, 2026, to the area of Church Street SE and Bellevue Street SE following a report that a male had pulled a black handgun from a satchel and used it to strike another individual.

Officers located a male matching the suspect’s description in the area. When they attempted to contact him, he fled on foot.

Following a foot pursuit, officers apprehended the juvenile near Pringle Creek with assistance from Salem Police K-9 Andor.

Officers located the satchel nearby, and detectives with the department’s Strategic Investigations Unit responded to assist with the investigation. Detectives obtained a search warrant for the satchel and discovered a handgun inside.

The juvenile was lodged at the Marion County Juvenile Detention Center on multiple charges, including unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon, interfering with a police officer and escape in the third degree. Police said the charges are related to activity observed by officers after the initial incident.

As of Friday, the victim of the reported assault had not been identified. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the victim’s identity to contact the Salem Police Department at 503-588-6123.

The investigation remains ongoing. Further inquiries should be directed to the Marion County District Attorney’s Office.
