Portland Man Dies After Multi-Vehicle Crash on Highway 26 in Clatsop County
CLATSOP COUNTY, Ore. — A 77-year-old Portland man died following a multi-vehicle crash Friday evening on U.S. Highway 26 in Clatsop County, according to Oregon State Police.
The crash occurred at approximately 5:18 p.m. Aug. 28 near milepost 24.
According to the preliminary investigation, Henry Herbert Greenwood, 77, of Portland, was driving a gray Honda Fit eastbound on Highway 26 when, for reasons that remain under investigation, the vehicle crossed into the westbound lane.
The Honda sideswiped a westbound black Tesla Model S driven by Tomislave Lakovic, 56, of Portland. The Honda then collided head-on with a westbound black Toyota Tacoma driven by Samantha Reanne Martindale, 30, of Molalla, which was following the Tesla.
After the initial collisions, an eastbound black Volkswagen Golf driven by Brandon J. Troost, 35, of Portland, attempted to avoid the Honda as it moved back into the eastbound lane. The Volkswagen was subsequently rear-ended by an eastbound Ford F-350 pickup driven by Scott Michael Harrington, 51, of Hillsboro.
Greenwood was transported by Life Flight to a Portland-area hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. A passenger in the Honda was also flown to a Portland-area hospital with serious injuries.
Lakovic, the Tesla driver, was not injured, and two passengers in the Tesla also escaped injury.
Martindale was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. Four passengers in the Toyota were also taken to a local hospital with injuries ranging from minor to serious.
Troost and a passenger in the Volkswagen reported minor injuries but declined transportation to a hospital. Harrington was not injured.
Highway 26 was affected for approximately five hours while emergency crews and investigators worked at the scene.
Oregon State Police was assisted by Medix Ambulance Service, Hamlet Rural Fire Protection District, Banks Fire District, Elsie Vinemaple Rural Fire Protection District and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
The investigation remains ongoing.
