SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — A wind-driven vegetation fire threatened the Mt. Vernon neighborhood in Springfield Wednesday afternoon, prompting immediate evacuations of residences in the fire’s path.
At approximately 1:15 p.m., Eugene Springfield Fire responded with neighboring fire departments and law enforcement agencies to a report of a fast-moving vegetation fire near Jasper Road and Mt. Vernon Road.
Fueled by strong winds, the fire quickly consumed several acres of ground vegetation and advanced toward the Mt. Vernon neighborhood. Ten Eugene Springfield Fire apparatus responded to the incident, assisted by crews from Pleasant Hill Goshen Fire, Lowell Fire, the Oregon Department of Forestry, Coburg Fire, Mohawk Fire and Upper McKenzie Fire.
Firefighters worked to stop the fire’s forward progress before it reached nearby homes.
Springfield Police, Oregon State Police and the Lane County Sheriff’s Office conducted immediate evacuations of residences threatened by the advancing fire.
Fire officials reported that the fire is currently under control. Crews will remain on scene throughout the evening to extinguish hot spots and monitor conditions.
