LANE COUNTY, Ore. — A 26-year-old Oregon City man drowned Saturday afternoon while paddleboarding on the Willamette River near Black Canyon Campground, according to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office.
At approximately 3:20 p.m. on July 18, Lane County Sheriff’s deputies and Oakridge Fire personnel responded to a report of a drowning near the campground. The caller told dispatchers that his son had been pulled from the water and was not breathing.
Bystanders immediately began performing CPR and continued lifesaving efforts until firefighters arrived on scene. Despite extensive rescue efforts, the man could not be revived.
The victim was identified as Justin Daniel Brudvig, 26, of Oregon City.
The Sheriff’s Office said the investigation determined Brudvig had been paddleboarding on the river without wearing a life jacket.
Authorities are reminding the public to take proper safety precautions when recreating on Lane County waterways. Officials recommend wearing a properly fitted life jacket at all times, staying sober while on the water, avoiding recreating alone, and using only a breakaway tether when attaching yourself to a paddleboard or other watercraft.
