WINCHESTER, Ore. — A 64-year-old Roseburg man died after his kayak overturned on the North Umpqua River near Amacher Park on July 9, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to a reported water rescue at approximately 12:24 p.m. at Amacher Park in Winchester.
The preliminary investigation found that Charles Robert Jensen, 64, of Roseburg, and a friend were kayaking from Amacher Park to Hestness Landing when Jensen’s kayak overturned in the first rapid along the route.
Authorities said Jensen went underwater, briefly resurfaced, and then disappeared beneath the water again. His friend was able to pull him onto nearby rocks and immediately began performing CPR. Investigators believe Jensen was submerged for approximately one minute.
Firefighters and emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene and continued lifesaving efforts, but Jensen could not be revived. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Douglas County Medical Examiner’s Office responded and assumed responsibility for the death investigation. Authorities said Jensen’s next of kin have been notified.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office expressed its condolences to Jensen’s family and friends.
Central Douglas Fire & Rescue and the Oregon State Police assisted with the response.
