BEND, Ore. — A back porch fire caused an estimated $75,000 in damage to a Bend home Wednesday evening, but firefighters prevented the blaze from spreading further into the residence.
Bend Fire & Rescue responded shortly before 5 p.m. to reports of a structure fire at 21312 Evelyn Court. Crews arrived with three fire engines, a ladder truck, two ambulances and three fire investigators.
The first firefighters on scene encountered heavy smoke coming from the front of the home, with the back porch fully engulfed in flames. Crews quickly attacked the fire and brought it under control, successfully preventing it from spreading throughout the structure.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
According to Bend Fire & Rescue, the homeowner and all occupants were out of town when the fire occurred. No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.
Officials estimate the fire caused approximately $75,000 in damage to the home. The property is insured, and the homeowner is working with their insurance company on restoration efforts.
Bend Fire & Rescue is also reminding residents to exercise caution as Central Oregon continues to experience extreme fire conditions.
Fire officials encourage residents to use extra care when operating barbecues, having warming fires where permitted, using equipment that produces sparks or embers, and properly disposing of smoking materials. They also recommend keeping a water source nearby, placing ashes in a noncombustible container, and remaining vigilant when using equipment capable of igniting dry vegetation.
