CURRY COUNTY, Ore. — An 18-year-old Washington man was killed Friday morning after the vehicle he was driving crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a converted motorhome on U.S. Highway 101 near Port Orford, according to the Oregon State Police.
The crash occurred at approximately 8:20 a.m. on June 26 near milepost 312 in Curry County.
A preliminary investigation determined that a black Chrysler Pacifica, driven by Luke Anree May Dizon, 18, of Covington, Washington, was traveling northbound when it drifted into the southbound lane and struck a small school bus that had been converted into a motorhome. The motorhome was being driven by David Eugene Johansen, 73, of Fort Bragg, California.
Investigators said Dizon was pronounced dead at the scene. Oregon State Police reported that he had reportedly fallen asleep at the wheel prior to the collision.
A passenger in the Chrysler, Maryanne Drake, 18, of Auburn, Washington, sustained serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Two other adult passengers in the Chrysler suffered minor injuries and were also taken to an area hospital. Another adult passenger was not injured.
Johansen, the driver of the converted motorhome, was not injured in the crash.
Highway 101 was impacted for approximately two hours while emergency crews investigated the scene and cleared the roadway.
The Oregon State Police was assisted by the Curry County Sheriff’s Office, Gold Beach Fire Department, and the Oregon Department of Transportation. The crash remains under investigation.
