EUGENE, Ore. — One person died and another was seriously injured in a late-night apartment fire Thursday in Eugene’s Churchill neighborhood, prompting a large response from Eugene Springfield Fire.
The fire was reported just before 11 p.m. on June 25, when multiple callers contacted Central Lane 911 to report a house fire in the 2500 block of Brittania Place that was possibly spreading to a neighboring residence.
Engine 10, responding from the Bailey Hill station, was the first crew to arrive and found heavy fire engulfing one unit of a two-story fourplex. Firefighters encountered intense fire conditions at the entrance of the multi-unit building while working to reach victims inside, leading incident commanders to request a second alarm.
Authorities said one occupant suffered serious injuries and was transported to PeaceHealth RiverBend Medical Center for treatment. A second occupant was found dead at the scene.
Residents of the adjoining units were able to evacuate safely, and no additional injuries were reported.
Firefighters successfully contained the bulk of the fire to the original unit but also battled flames that had spread into the attic space of a neighboring apartment.
In total, the response included eight fire companies, four chief officers, four ambulances, two deputy fire marshals, EMS 1, and Support 1.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Officials have not yet released the identities of the deceased or injured occupant pending notification of family members.
