DESCHUTES COUNTY, Ore. — A 59-year-old Gilchrist woman was killed and another person seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash on Highway 126 west of Redmond on Friday afternoon, according to the Oregon State Police.
Troopers responded to the crash at approximately 12:05 p.m. June 19 near milepost 103.5 in Deschutes County.
A preliminary investigation found that a black GMC Sierra pulling a tandem axle dump trailer, driven by 26-year-old Luis Alberto Santos Milan of Bend, was traveling westbound when it attempted to avoid slowing traffic. Investigators said the pickup crossed into the eastbound lane, where the dump trailer was struck head-on by an eastbound gray Honda Accord.
The Honda was driven by 58-year-old Christopher Richard Pettit of Gilchrist. His passenger, 59-year-old Michelle Renee Pettit of Gilchrist, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Christopher Pettit suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
According to OSP, Santos Milan was not injured. He remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
Traffic on Highway 126 was affected for approximately three hours while emergency personnel investigated the crash.
Oregon State Police were assisted by the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, local fire and EMS agencies, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
The crash remains under investigation.
