EUGENE, Ore. — A Sunday evening fire in West Eugene damaged two homes and displaced multiple residents, prompting a large response from Eugene Springfield Fire and several partner agencies.
Just after 7:30 p.m. on June 21, Central Lane 911 received reports of a fire at an abandoned home near the intersection of West Broadway Avenue and Grant Street. Additional callers reported flames rising above the roofline of the residence.
Engine 2 and Tower 2 arrived slightly more than three minutes after dispatch and found heavy fire conditions on the rear portions of two homes. Flames had spread into second-floor interior areas and attic spaces of both structures.
Firefighters faced several hazards while battling the blaze, including live power lines that had fallen behind both homes and overheated propane tanks that were venting and contributing to the fire. Due to the extent of the fire and the involvement of two residences, a second alarm was requested to bring additional personnel and resources to the scene.
No injuries were reported. However, families living in both sides of the affected duplex were displaced as a result of the fire.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Eugene Springfield Fire was assisted by the Eugene Police Department and Eugene Water & Electric Board (EWEB). In total, the response included 11 fire crews, four chief officers, two ambulances, two deputy fire marshals, an EMS captain and a support unit.
