Shortly after 8 a.m. Monday, Bend Fire & Rescue crews responded to a reported structure fire west of Bend along Highway 20 near Dayton and Tweed roads, where firefighters found a shop fully engulfed in flames with the fire spreading into nearby brush.
With no immediate water supply available, crews launched a defensive attack, focusing on protecting nearby structures and equipment while preventing the flames from advancing through surrounding vegetation. Firefighters brought the blaze under control within 40 minutes.
The shop was destroyed in the fire. Officials estimate structural damage at approximately $100,000, with an additional $50,000 in contents lost. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Several agencies assisted at the scene, including Redmond Fire & Rescue, Cloverdale Rural Fire Protection District, Alfalfa Fire, and the U.S. Forest Service, which provided water and additional resources. Bend Fire & Rescue also credited the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office and Oregon State Police for traffic control and support.
Fire officials said the property owner’s defensible space and vegetation management efforts played a significant role in limiting the fire’s spread. According to Bend Fire, those measures slowed the advancing flames and allowed crews to contain the blaze before it could move beyond the property toward Gerking Market Road and Highway 20.
Bend Fire encouraged residents to create defensible space around homes and properties to reduce wildfire risk. Information on wildfire preparedness is available through the city’s “Own Your Zone” program.
The incident occurred within Deschutes County Rural Fire Protection District No. 2, which serves areas outside the city limits of Bend and contracts with Bend Fire & Rescue to provide fire suppression, emergency medical services, rescue operations, fire prevention and community risk reduction programs.
While crews remained at the scene of the structure fire, firefighters were dispatched at approximately 9:30 a.m. to a second emergency involving a brush fire near Southwest Yates Road and Southwest Century Drive in Bend.
Upon arrival, crews found a large area of brush burning, with bystanders attempting to contain the flames using fire extinguishers. Bend Fire personnel, assisted by the Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch Center, quickly stopped the fire before it threatened nearby structures.
Investigators determined the brush fire was caused by lawn edging equipment that produced a spark and ignited dry grass.
With fire danger remaining extreme, Bend Fire & Rescue reminded residents to exercise caution when using outdoor equipment and to avoid activities that could generate sparks and potentially ignite wildfires.
