MEDFORD, Ore. — A suspected burglar was shot by a homeowner and later taken into custody Sunday night after barricading himself inside a Medford residence, according to the Medford Police Department.
Officers responded to the 800 block of Gilman Road at approximately 10:47 p.m. on June 21 after receiving reports of a burglary in progress. A caller told dispatchers that a person was attempting to break into the home and that shots had been fired by the homeowner.
Police said the family inside the residence was able to safely leave the home and meet responding officers at a location away from the scene.
Officers established a perimeter around the residence and, with the assistance of drone operators, located the suspect inside the home. Authorities communicated with the suspect, who was later identified as 21-year-old Nathan Roberson. Police discovered Roberson had suffered a gunshot wound.
Roberson was taken into custody without incident and transported to a local hospital for treatment. He remains under police custody while receiving medical care. Investigators said Roberson is from out of state and had been staying at a nearby hotel.
The Medford Police Department said the investigation remains ongoing. No formal charges have been filed at this time, and the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office has been consulted regarding potential charges related to the burglary.
Police thanked the Central Point Police Department, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and Oregon State Police for assisting with the incident.
Authorities have not released additional details as the investigation continues.
