At the request of Bend Police, investigators have updated details surrounding a series of assaults and robberies that led to the arrest of a Bend man Monday morning, clarifying that one of the incidents occurred at a nearby intersection rather than inside a laundromat.
According to the Bend Police Department, officers received new video surveillance on June 16 with assistance from community members. After reviewing the footage, investigators determined the initial assault and attempted robbery reported near 407 SE Third St. actually occurred at the intersection of Southeast Vine Street and Southeast Third Street, not inside the Express Eco Laundromat.
Police thanked residents who provided evidence and information that helped clarify the circumstances of the incidents.
The investigation began at about 9:28 a.m. June 15 when a Bend Police officer was flagged down at the Royal Gateway Motel, 475 SE Third St., by a victim who had just been assaulted during an attempted robbery. The victim directed the officer to the suspect, who was still nearby.
Officers located the suspect, later identified as 48-year-old Bend resident José Luis García Chávez. Police said García Chávez was covered in blood when contacted. A Taser was deployed during the encounter before he was taken into custody.
Just minutes later, at approximately 9:30 a.m., officers received a separate report of a robbery at Ace Market, 449 SE Third St. Investigators said the suspect demanded money from an employee and chased the worker through the store before a fight broke out.
Police later determined the same suspect was responsible for both incidents.
The victims suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene by Bend Fire & Rescue paramedics. No officers were injured.
García Chávez was arrested on suspicion of second-degree attempted robbery, third-degree robbery, two counts of fourth-degree assault, two counts of menacing, attempted assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, attempted third-degree theft, third-degree theft and two counts of second-degree disorderly conduct.
Authorities said García Chávez sustained injuries before officers contacted him. He was treated by paramedics and transported to St. Charles Medical Center before being lodged at the Deschutes County Jail.
Southbound lanes of Southeast Third Street were closed for about an hour during the investigation. Bend Police were assisted by Bend Fire & Rescue and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
Anyone who witnessed either incident and has not yet spoken with investigators is asked to contact Detective Dallas Wilson at 541-693-6911.
