LANE COUNTY, Ore. — A Springfield man was killed and another driver injured Monday afternoon in a three-vehicle crash on Highway 126 west of Eugene, according to the Oregon State Police.
Troopers responded to the crash at approximately 3:53 p.m. on June 15 near milepost 52, close to Fisher Road in Lane County.
A preliminary investigation found that a red Mazda3, driven by 46-year-old John Michael Unrein of Springfield, was traveling westbound when it crossed the center line for reasons that remain under investigation. The vehicle collided head-on with an eastbound white Chevrolet Equinox driven by 51-year-old Gina Mae Nix of Veneta.
The impact caused the Chevrolet to roll over and come to rest in the westbound lane. The Mazda continued into the eastbound lane, where it struck a red Hyundai Elantra driven by 23-year-old Laura Valent Reales Gutierrez, whose city of residence was not immediately available.
Unrein was pronounced dead at the scene.
Nix and an adult passenger in the Chevrolet were not injured. Reales Gutierrez sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The crash closed or impacted traffic on Highway 126 for approximately four hours while investigators processed the scene and crews cleared the roadway.
Oregon State Police were assisted by the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, Lane Fire Authority, the Lane County Medical Examiner’s Office, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
