SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — A potentially damaging brush fire near downtown Springfield was quickly contained Friday evening thanks to the vigilance of a Springfield police officer and the rapid response of firefighters.
According to Eugene Springfield Fire, crews were dispatched to a brush fire at 221 B Street shortly before 7 p.m. after a Springfield Police Department officer noticed smoke while leaving the Springfield Justice Center and requested a fire response.
When firefighters arrived, they found a vegetation fire burning near a building. The intense heat from the flames had already broken windows and was beginning to threaten the structure, nearly igniting the interior of the building.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze and then conducted a thorough inspection of the building, including the interior and roof areas, to ensure the fire had not spread beyond its point of origin.
Officials said the prompt reporting by the Springfield police officer and the swift response from fire crews prevented what could have become a significant structure fire.
No injuries were reported, and the building was successfully saved from major damage.
The cause of the brush fire has not been released.
