SALEM, Ore. — A Washington man is facing felony charges after Salem police say he kidnapped and repeatedly assaulted his significant other during a multi-state incident that ended in Salem early Friday morning.
According to the Salem Police Department, officers arrested Michael Knabe, 42, of Wenatchee, Washington, on June 5 in connection with the alleged kidnapping and assault of a 41-year-old woman from the same city.
Investigators said the incident began on the evening of June 4 when Knabe allegedly kidnapped the victim in Wenatchee. During the drive from Washington to Oregon, he is accused of assaulting her multiple times.
The victim was able to escape and seek help shortly before 6 a.m. on June 5. At approximately 5:56 a.m., Salem police officers were dispatched to the Center Market, located at 1790 Center Street NE, after receiving reports that a woman had run into the business seeking assistance.
When officers arrived, they found the victim suffering from multiple severe injuries. She was transported to Salem Hospital for treatment.
Detectives from Salem Police’s Felony Crimes and Violent Crimes units responded and continued the investigation. Authorities later located Knabe and took him into custody without incident.
Knabe was lodged at the Marion County Jail on charges of Kidnapping in the First Degree and Assault in the Second Degree.
Police said the victim is currently receiving assistance from a Salem Police Domestic Violence Advocate and is being provided temporary housing until family members can travel to Salem and bring her home.
The investigation remains ongoing. Officials said any additional inquiries regarding the case should be directed to the Marion County District Attorney’s Office.
