NEWPORT, Ore. — A Newport man already incarcerated at the Lincoln County Jail is facing additional felony charges after allegedly attempting to stab a deputy with a sharpened piece of broken plastic during a confrontation inside the facility.
According to the Newport Police Department, officers responded to the Lincoln County Jail at approximately 10:15 p.m. on May 24 after jail staff reported that an inmate had attempted to assault a deputy.
Investigators identified the inmate as Tyce Anthony Bernabeu, 25, of Newport.
Police said deputies were attempting to remove an item from Bernabeu’s cell for safety reasons when he allegedly became physically combative with jail staff. During the ensuing struggle, a deputy’s body camera and mounting equipment were knocked to the ground and broken apart.
Authorities said Bernabeu allegedly retrieved a roughly four-inch piece of hardened plastic from the damaged camera mount. The broken plastic had formed a jagged edge and pointed tip, which investigators say Bernabeu then used in an attempt to stab a deputy.
Jail deputies were able to wrest the improvised weapon away from Bernabeu and take him into custody without further incident.
As a result of the investigation, Bernabeu was arrested and lodged on the following charges:
- Attempted Assault in the First Degree
- Unlawful Use of a Weapon
The incident remains under investigation.
