WINSTON, Ore. — Residents of a Winston apartment complex helped stop a balcony fire before it could spread Saturday afternoon, according to Central Douglas Fire & Rescue.
Fire crews were dispatched at 11:53 a.m. on May 23 to the 200 block of Gregory Drive after reports of a fire on a second-story balcony at an apartment complex.
Officials said the occupant of the apartment heard smoke alarms sounding and smelled smoke before discovering the fire. Residents of the complex used several fire extinguishers to control the flames before firefighters arrived.
When crews reached the scene, they found light smoke coming from the second-story balcony. Firefighters deployed a hose line and extinguished remaining hot spots. The fire was contained to the exterior balcony area and did not spread into the apartment building.
No injuries were reported among firefighters or residents.
Central Douglas Fire & Rescue responded with four engines and one command unit. Crews were assisted at the scene by Avista Gas and Pacific Power.
