A man was arrested Tuesday morning after allegedly leading Lane County deputies on a pursuit that ended in a crash on Interstate 5 and a dangerous attempt to flee across freeway traffic.
According to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began around 6:30 a.m. May 12 when a deputy spotted a vehicle driving recklessly on Delta Highway. When the deputy attempted a traffic stop, the driver sped away, initiating a short pursuit.
Authorities identified the driver as 34-year-old Jeffrey Allen McGee. Investigators said McGee fled eastbound on Beltline Highway toward Interstate 5. As he exited onto the freeway, his vehicle reportedly lost control and crashed into another vehicle before coming to a stop on the shoulder of the interstate.
Deputies said McGee then ran from the crash scene on foot, crossing all lanes of Interstate 5. Traffic on the freeway reportedly came to a stop as motorists attempted to avoid hitting him.
Deputies later located McGee nearby and took him into custody. No serious injuries were reported in the incident.
McGee was booked into the Lane County Jail on multiple charges, including:
- Elude by vehicle
- Elude by foot
- Assault in the third degree
- Hit and run
- Reckless driving
- Reckless endangering
- Driving under the influence of intoxicants (DUII)
- Resisting arrest
