Salem Police Arrest Woman Linked to Multiple Theft Cases
SALEM, Ore. — Salem police arrested a 39-year-old woman this week in connection with a series of theft incidents reported across the city over the past several months.
According to the Salem Police Department, officers arrested Sara Maria Guzman-Staff of Salem on May 12, 2026, following an investigation into multiple shoplifting cases that occurred between December 2025 and May 2026.
Police said Guzman-Staff had been identified as the suspect in four separate shoplifting incidents. The investigations were initially handled by the department’s Telephone Reporting Office, which reviews reports submitted through the agency’s online reporting system.
Telephone Reporting Specialists connected the cases by reviewing evidence provided by retailers and later identified Guzman-Staff as a person of interest. The information was then coordinated with patrol officers and investigators for further follow-up.
After additional investigation, officers confirmed Guzman-Staff as the suspect, police said.
On May 12, officers located and stopped a vehicle being driven by Guzman-Staff. During the traffic stop, officers reportedly found her in possession of methamphetamine.
Guzman-Staff was arrested on charges connected to the four theft investigations, as well as unlawful possession of methamphetamine. She was lodged at the Marion County Jail on multiple charges, including first-degree theft and unlawful possession of methamphetamine.
The Salem Police Department credited the coordination between the Telephone Reporting Office and patrol officers for helping identify the suspect and interrupt what officials described as a cycle of thefts.
Police also encouraged community members to report criminal activity, noting that reports from the public can help investigators connect multiple cases. Many non-emergency crimes can be reported through the department’s online reporting system.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional inquiries have been referred to the Marion County District Attorney’s Office.
