REDMOND, Ore. — A newly formed organization aimed at supporting women across Oregon’s criminal justice system has selected a Central Oregon leader as its first president.
The Oregon Association for Women in Criminal Justice, established in March 2026 as a special chapter of the Oregon Peace Officers Association, elected April Huey of the Redmond Police Department as its inaugural president.
Huey has served with the department since 2003 and was promoted to lieutenant in 2022, becoming the first woman in the agency’s history to hold that rank.
The OAWCJ was created to support, empower, and connect women working in Oregon’s criminal justice field. Its mission includes providing mentorship, professional development, networking opportunities, and training, while also focusing on recruitment and leadership development.
According to the organization, it aims to foster collaboration and resilience among its members while promoting excellence across the profession—values that align closely with Huey’s leadership approach.
In addition to her new role, Huey founded Central Oregon Women in Law Enforcement in 2022, a nonprofit organization focused on mentoring and supporting women pursuing careers in law enforcement throughout the region. She continues to serve as its president.
“RPD is proud to have Lt. Huey serving as President of OAWCJ and looks forward to supporting her and the association as they inspire women in law enforcement,” said Redmond Police Chief Devin Lewis in a statement.
