BEND, Ore. — A Saturday evening fire in a Bend mobile home park damaged two residences and prompted multiple emergency calls after explosions were reported.
At approximately 5:58 p.m. on May 2, 2026, several 911 callers reported a structure fire in the Suntree Village Mobile Home Park. Initial reports indicated a single home was on fire, with callers also describing explosions.
Fire crews arrived on scene at 6:04 p.m. and discovered the flames had already spread to a second residence. Responders were able to quickly bring the fire under control, containing both fires within about 35 minutes. The last units cleared the scene at 7:42 p.m.
According to authorities, one home was destroyed, while a neighboring residence sustained minor damage. The homeowner of the primary residence declined assistance from the American Red Cross.
An investigation determined the fire originated on the front porch of the home that was ultimately lost. Officials say improperly discarded smoking materials were placed into a plastic trash can containing other waste, which ignited and spread. The fire then reached nearby propane tanks connected to a grill, causing the explosions reported by witnesses.
The Oregon State Fire Marshal reports that, on average, 11 people in Oregon die each year in fires caused by smoking materials such as cigarettes, cigars, and pipe tobacco.
Bend Fire & Rescue is reminding residents to properly dispose of smoking materials in non-combustible containers and to keep them away from anything that can burn. Officials note that even when smoking outdoors, careless disposal into vegetation, mulch, planter boxes, or trash receptacles can quickly lead to dangerous fires.
