EUGENE, Ore. — An inmate accused of attacking a Lane County Sheriff’s deputy inside the county jail is now facing more serious charges following an update in the case.
Reid Michael Squires, 23, of Eugene, was arraigned Friday in Lane County Circuit Court on charges of Assault in the Second Degree and Assault on a Public Safety Officer. The charges were upgraded after further investigation into the incident.
According to authorities, the assault occurred April 30 while a deputy assigned to the jail was securing single-cell doors during dayroom hours in a housing unit. Officials said Squires, an adult in custody, unexpectedly began punching the deputy in the face.
The attack continued until another inmate intervened, temporarily stopping the assault until additional deputies arrived on the scene.
The deputy suffered significant injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. She has since been released but continues to recover. Officials noted the deputy has more than 25 years of law enforcement experience.
Initially, Squires was charged with Assault on a Public Safety Officer and Assault in the Fourth Degree. Following the investigation, those charges were elevated.
Squires remains in custody awaiting trial in a separate case investigated by the Eugene Police Department. In that case, he faces multiple serious charges, including first-degree rape, first-degree sexual abuse, first-degree sodomy, and using a child in a display of sexually explicit conduct.
The incident remains under investigation.
