PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland Fire & Rescue (PF&R) crews brought a significant early morning residential fire under control Sunday after flames heavily involved a home in the Kerns Neighborhood and briefly threatened nearby structures.
At 4:57 a.m., the Portland Fire & Rescue was dispatched to reports of a house fire near SE 30th Place and SE Stark Street. The first-arriving company, Engine 9, reported visible flames from several blocks away and confirmed the corner residence was “well involved with fire” upon arrival.
Officials said 26 firefighters were initially assigned to the incident, responding with four engines, two trucks, and two battalion chiefs. Command crews quickly prioritized protecting nearby homes, some of which were only a few feet from the burning structure.
Firefighters deployed hose lines between the involved residence and adjacent homes to prevent fire spread while managing rapidly decreasing water supplies from onboard engines. A hydrant connection was established shortly after, restoring continuous water flow and stabilizing suppression efforts.
Crews reported the home was undergoing significant remodeling, with construction materials visible at the property. Due to heavy fire conditions, interior operations were not possible, and firefighting efforts focused on exterior suppression and exposure protection.
As flames intensified, structural concerns developed when a shared wall between the involved home and a neighboring residence began to weaken and lean. A second alarm was requested, bringing additional engines, a truck company, and command staff. In total, more than 50 personnel were assigned or en route during peak operations.
Heavy smoke initially prompted concern that fire may have extended into the attic of an adjacent home. However, after entry and assessment, crews confirmed no fire had spread into the neighboring structure, and smoke intrusion was limited to the original fire building.
During overhaul operations, firefighters discovered a ruptured natural gas service line beneath the front porch, identified by visible blue flames feeding from the leak. Crews immediately established protective hose lines while coordinating with NW Natural, which later excavated the street to fully isolate and secure the damaged line.
The Portland Bureau of Emergency Communications managed dispatch operations during the incident, while the Portland Police Bureau assisted with traffic control along SE Stark Street. Utility coordination was also supported by Portland General Electric and NW Natural.
Fire officials said the blaze was brought under control approximately 30 minutes after initial attack, preventing extension into neighboring homes. Some exterior damage occurred to the adjacent residence and a nearby tree was partially scorched.
Three firefighters sustained burn injuries through protective gear while operating in extreme heat conditions. All were transported for evaluation and are expected to return to duty. Several fire apparatus also sustained heat-related damage, including melted equipment components and vehicle trim, though none were removed from service.
At the height of the response, PF&R said nearly half of its on-duty workforce was engaged either at the scene or reassigned to maintain citywide emergency coverage. During the incident window, additional fire calls across Portland required simultaneous staffing adjustments and resource redistribution.
No civilians were displaced, as both the primary structure and the adjacent home were unoccupied at the time of the fire.
The cause remains under investigation by the PF&R Fire Investigation Team.
