LINCOLN COUNTY, Ore. (April 17, 2026) – A two-vehicle crash on Highway 20 near Newport on Thursday afternoon resulted in the death of a Waldport woman and left two others injured, according to the Oregon State Police.
Troopers responded to the crash at approximately 1:16 p.m. on April 16 near milepost 1. A preliminary investigation found that a silver Chrysler Town & Country van, driven by 77-year-old Rosalea Ann Engelbrecht of Waldport, was traveling westbound when it veered into the oncoming lane for reasons that remain under investigation.
An eastbound gray Toyota Highlander, operated by 82-year-old John Sterling Daigle of Newport, attempted to avoid the van. However, the Chrysler continued into the eastbound lane, resulting in a head-on collision.
Engelbrecht was transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries and was later pronounced deceased.
Daigle sustained minor injuries and was also taken to a local hospital. A passenger in the Toyota, identified as 77-year-old Vicki Ray Bock of Newport, suffered minor injuries and was transported for treatment.
The crash prompted a closure and traffic disruption on Highway 20 for approximately three hours as emergency crews conducted an on-scene investigation.
Oregon State Police were assisted by the Newport Police Department, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Newport Fire Department, Pacific West Ambulance, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
