BEND, Ore. — A Bend man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after allegedly threatening a deputy and fleeing on a motorcycle, prompting a large law enforcement response in Deschutes River Woods.
According to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, 40-year-old Paul Akehurst was taken into custody around 2:34 p.m. after deputies located him following a nearly hour-long search.
Authorities said the incident began at approximately 1:32 p.m., shortly after Akehurst had appeared in Deschutes County Circuit Court earlier in the day. Deputies reported that Akehurst contacted a deputy in the Deschutes River Woods area, where he allegedly made threatening statements and gestures before yelling at the deputy and fleeing on a motorcycle.
A deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but Akehurst sped away, leading deputies to the area of Cherokee and Navajo roads. The pursuit prompted a coordinated search effort involving multiple deputies, including a sweep of nearby railroad tracks.
As a precaution, BNSF Railway temporarily halted train traffic in the area while law enforcement conducted the search.
Deputies ultimately located Akehurst and arrested him without further incident.
The arrest comes less than a month after Akehurst was taken into custody by the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team on February 25 in the Sunriver area. In that case, he was wanted on multiple felony warrants, including aggravated identity theft, eluding, reckless driving, reckless endangering, and driving while suspended or revoked.
Following Tuesday’s incident, Akehurst was lodged at the Deschutes County Adult Jail and faces new charges, including eluding and reckless endangering.
