Washington, D.C. — U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick announced recently that President Donald Trump has approved the first three projects under Japan’s $550 billion investment commitment to the United States as part of a new U.S.–Japan trade agreement.
According to Lutnick’s statement, the projects represent a combined $36 billion investment across power generation, oil and gas infrastructure, and advanced manufacturing.
The first project involves development of what officials described as the largest natural gas generation facility in history. Planned for Ohio, the facility is expected to generate 9.2 gigawatts of power. Lutnick said the project is intended to strengthen grid reliability, expand baseload power capacity, and support domestic manufacturing through increased energy availability.
The second project calls for construction of a deepwater crude oil export facility in what the administration referred to as the “Gulf of America.” The facility is projected to generate between $20 billion and $30 billion annually in U.S. crude exports. Officials stated the project would expand export capacity and support the United States’ role as a leading global energy supplier.
The third initiative focuses on establishing synthetic industrial diamond manufacturing capacity within the United States. The administration said the facility would onshore production of 100 percent of U.S. demand for synthetic diamond grit, a material used in industrial and technological manufacturing processes.
Lutnick said the projects are expected to create thousands of American jobs. Under the structure outlined in the announcement, Japan will provide the capital investment, while the infrastructure will be built domestically. Returns are designed to allow Japan to earn investment proceeds while expanding U.S. industrial and energy capacity.
Lutnick credited President Trump’s leadership and thanked the Government of Japan for its partnership in advancing the agreement.
