Lincoln County, OR. — Deputies with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Toledo man following an investigation into multiple reports of mail theft in the Seal Rock area.
On February 19, 2025, deputies responded to reports of stolen mail near Northwest Kinglet Street. During the investigation, deputies learned that similar thefts had been occurring over the previous several months, with residents reporting stolen packages, tax documents, and other mail.
Investigators obtained photographs of a suspect captured on a nearby security camera and shared the images with neighboring law enforcement agencies to help identify the individual. The suspect was identified as Joshua Van Hoorebeke of Toledo.
Van Hoorebeke was contacted and taken into custody on a charge of Mail Theft (ORS 164.162).
Authorities said mail theft is often a crime of opportunity, with suspects seeking items of value such as tax refunds, checks, personal documents, banking records, and credit card information. Stolen mail can be used to commit additional crimes, including identity theft and bank fraud.
Residents are encouraged to collect mail daily, use secure drop-off locations, and report suspicious activity to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service at 877-876-2455 or online at MailTheft.USPIS.gov.
